🚴ROUTE OVERVIEW

Distance: ~36 miles (58km) Elevation: ~1800ft Estimated timings: 7am early start today, finshing around 3pm. Leisurely 8 hours to enjoy the final day, including Severn Bridge crossing, parkrun, breaks & last day publicity.

Overview: Day 8, the final day! This is the day I've been waiting for, the culmination of months of preparation and training. Starting at 7am I'll cycle 7 miles to the Severn Bridge and have a quick comfort break at the motorway services. I'll then have a leisurely ride from England, across the 2.5 mile long, 60m high suspension bridge over the Severn Estuary into Wales. The bridge crossing will be amazing in good weather but quite difficult in rainy or windy weather as it is so exposed. The current weather forecast is for a moderate breeze, this means I'll probably be blown around quite a lot due to the weight I'm carrying on the bike, especially if lorries are going past on the motorway at high speeds. I have trained for this at the Wyre Estuary in Lancashire, cycling a fully loaded bike in awful weather across the Shard Bridge. It could be tough, but as long as the bridge remains open I can do it! Once I reach the Chepstow side of the estuary I will swap my bike for running gear and run the Severn Bridge parkrun with the regulars and parkrun tourism visitors. After parkrun I'll only have 26 miles to go and will take it gently, cycling mostly off-road on bike paths or canal towpaths before stopping for lunch in Caerleon. After lunch the last 10 miles will be a particularly slow section along riverside boardwalks before meandering along the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal and reflecting on my journey. My last big hill is around 5 miles before the end, then it should be relatively flat all the way. By taking it slowly I'll leave plenty of time for my brother and family to prepare a finish line, get the cakes out and have a glass of wine ready to welcome me to the end. My aim was to cycle from my home in Lancashire to my nephew Charlie's in Risca, cycling a minimum of 350 miles. Following my planned route, barring any major mechanical issues, I should complete 388 miles plus a bit extra for any unexpected road closure diversions or fun looking detours. Thank you for your support!
